WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?
permaculture is the art of approving to receive gifts. and mother earth provides us richly, as far as we let her do so. it is not our merit to live here on this planet. but it will depend from our future kind of interacting, whether we shall live here any longer…
for this reason we should discover again the rules of nature and learn how to apply them in a sustainable way. permaculture was the first system to apply these rules of nature successfully about 50 years ago in australia. today we are involved to apply these rules of nature not only in agriculture, but nearly in all sectors of human activity…
THE THREE BASIC RULES OF NATURE:
the first basic rule of nature: there is no garbage!
the earth is a closed system. it is impossible, that anything could possibly get lost. whatever comes into being or is being dissolved has a reason and an intention as well. nothing is useless. and there is no waste either! everything is meant to support the ongoing circle of life. where ever we are not capable to recognize the context of each subject, we start to produce garbage and disorder. and by this way we will disturb and finally destroy our planet earth. we are lucky, that our disturbance is painful. how else could we realize, that we are doing something wrong…
from this first rule derives the second basic rule of nature: there is no death!
nothing can be lost or disappear means, whatever comes into being must come out of something being dissolved. so there is no death either. because everything what is going to be dissolved is going to be adapted into a new form of life. when i eat an apple the microbes inside me are digesting the apple into life energy for me and germinable seeds and fertilizer for the plants. and just like the apple so shall i return as a ripe fruit into the digestive system of mother earth’s humus – getting inhumed as we speak. because here in the black and fertile earth, the very same microbes transform us into new life energy and nutrients for the plants and their fruits. the same fruits i was eating all my life shall carry particles of me and will nourish all the animals including my descendants. by this way i become a part of all living beings. and i am walking in the flesh of all beings…
and from both of these rules derives the third and most difficile basic rule of nature:
everything has it’s own time and it’s own place to happen!
nothing happens accidentally. every small detail is in a wonderful way connected with the whole world’s ensemble. what ever is happening has a certain meaning. there is nothing more exiting, than to perceive and sense the right place at the right moment. the question is only: am i able to trust my own instincts…? am i aware of my own sensations…? do i follow my own feelings…? and do i acknowledge, what my brain tries to communicate with me…? if yes, then we are able to realize these natural correlations. and at that very moment, when we join the whole symphony, we feel lucky… lucky to be at the right time in the right place…
in these permaculture workshops you will have the chance to use all your senses, to follow your instincts and listen to your feelings. and last not least we are going to use our brains…
program of a one week workshop:
Sunday: INTRODUCTION INTO THE BASICS OF PERMACULTURE
we are going to observe the principle of transformation directly in nature. we will understand the relationship of the microbiom and life. and so we try to understand the mystery of all the wild herbs, trees and animals. after all we shall be able to understand the roll of our instincts and the mercy of receiving gifts and being lucky…
Monday: WE ARE GOING TO CREATE A SWALE (=swale-french drain):
we will construct an isohypsometer and messure with it the isohypses (contour lines). before we start digging, we try to sense all the wild herbs growing there. we collect the wild herbs in order to create a liquid manure out of them. we are going to smell and taste the naked earth. we observe which trees are growing nearby in order to respect them in our work. and finally we dig the swale out.
Tuesday: – WE ARE GOING TO HAVE ONE DAY REST IN ORDER TO DIGEST –
Wednesday: SOWING THE SWALE BED AND PLANTING IT
we are levelling the swale bed exactly horizontally. we perceive and evaluate the microclimate and the soil. in correspondence to our observations we choose seeds and different plants. then we plant tuber vegetables, ground cover plants, herbage, salads and vegetables…
Thursday: WE CONTINUE PLANTING AND APPLY MULCHING
we perceive shrubs and trees with their personal qualities and choose the suitable ones for our planting. then we are mulching the whole swale. finally we water the whole installation once.
Friday: BLESSING THE EARTH, QUESTIONS AND PROSPECTS, CLOSING CEREMONY
we are going to bless the earth and let us bless by mother earth. we think about applying the principles of permaculture in social and economical contexts. and we celebrate all together in the evening with fresh raw food from our permaculture garden and with music we sing and play together…
Saturdays are free for arrival and departure…
we are looking forward to work with you this summer…!
